Mini Implants

Definition

  • Mini-implants are thin and small implants that temporarily function as natural teeth during treatment and at the same time provide comfort for the patient by increasing denture attachment.

Differently from standard screw teeth, they do not get into contact with the bone and used as a temporary solution during treatment. Therefore, they are not an alternative to standard implants. Surface structure of mini-implants is developed in a manner to allow easy removal from the bone surface they have been placed on. Therefore, they do not integrate with the bone, also called

Mini implants application areas

  • Mini-implants are used as sensitive connecting parts of permanent dentures in suitable cases in order to increase the stability of moving or fixed dentures during treatment.

They are also used as a denture support or connecting part in jaws with excessive bone loss or thinning (the surface structure of such screw mini-implants should be compatible with oseointegration).

Another function of mini-implants is to make space for permanent standard screw teeth and to support the temporary dentures placed in the area.

They are also used to prevent the thinning or contraction of bones that have been extended or expanded due to advanced surgical procedures such as bone elevation or bone extension.

Application of mini implants

  • Differently from standard screw teeth, mini-implants do not require opening of a hole in bone for the screw tooth. If a hole is to be opened, a thin channel should be established with the help of a single drill.

The implantation technique used for mini-implants is direct screwing on the bone surface. The procedure is often short and easy.

Since this is not counted a surgical operation, the patient does not experience any pain or swelling after the procedure. Therefore, mini-implants are implanted without cutting gums and/or opening bone surfaces.

Duration

  • Average implantation time for each mini-implant is 10 minutes.

Advantages of mini implants

  • Mini-implants increase the attachment of dentures and provide the patient with comfort during treatment.
  • Problems such as dents and early contact that may occur in toothless jaws that have been applied standard implants may result in damage to implants. In such mouths, mini screw teeth help protect permanent implants.
  • Mini-implants make it possible to prepare implant-supported dentures without the necessity to carry out extra surgical procedures on toothless lower jaws with excessive bone thinning.
  • Mini-implants also positively influence the success of various other bone operations carried out with advanced surgical techniques.
  • In cases where permanent implants are required, the patient can be supported with temporary crowns by using mini-implants which helps prevent certain aesthetic problems.

Technology and success factors

Implantation of mini screw teeth does not require the use of a particular technological device. They can be easily applied with the help of a special handpiece called holder.

Correct diagnosis, appropriate planning and precise application are of great importance to success. Therefore, this procedure requires expertise and experience.
